Summary

What’s Cooking? is a vibrant depiction of food, family, and community. Each day, Anu and Chetan return from the market with something new, sparking delicious guesses from curious neighbours. From sizzling snacks to hearty meals, their kitchen becomes a hub of flavour and fun. Set in the lively neighbourhood of Arjun Nagar, this playful tale invites readers into a world where every meal brings people closer.

Context

In this project with GetLitt Publications, the picture book was created to familiarise kids (4-7yrs) with food and vegetables often found on the dining table.

The story takes the reader on a journey not only to explore the vibrant neighbourhood where the characters live, but also to understand the different vegetables and how they might be found in dishes they find in their day-to-day lives.

BRIEF

NOTE

As the brother-sister duo go on daily adventures and buy different vegetables while running errands, Anu and Chetan interact with the lively characters within the marketplace.

To bring the vegetables and the marketplace to the centre stage in the narrative, the illustration focuses on highly detailed background spreads and vibrant food. As Anu and Chetan become the narrative vehicle for the reader to experience the world of Arjun Nagar, the characters are drawn in black and white. The minimalism of the character designs also helps in offsetting the saturated backgrounds.

In this project with GetLitt Publications, the picture book was created to familiarise kids (0-3yrs) with animals and their sounds.

Recognising the caregivers who accompany infants while reading stories, this book aims to actively involve said caregivers in the “play” of reading, making the book an active tool of interaction between the two readers as they go through the “silly-goofy” story.
